Unfortunately, it usually takes the loss of an important letter or resume`
to understand the importance of the words 'BACKUP'. Backing up simply means having
a spare copy of your files incase disaster strikes. Disaster could come in the form of a
hard disk failure or simply saving a file over the top of an important file accidentally. Imagine a University student
and having to retype hours of work in lost assignments due to a hard drive failure. Or that important letter you are in the middle of
writing lost due to a younger member of the family accidentally saving over your work.
Disasters happen and usually at the most worst possible moment!
On this page, we will look at a few different ways of backing up.
Firstly :- floppy disk (1.44 meg). This is a quick and convenient way of backing up small files and data.
Simply a matter of going to windows explorer, finding the file you want to back up and sending it to your
floppy drive. For larger amounts of data you could always invest in a zip disk(an add on to most computers)
Zip disk usually come in two sizes 100meg and 250meg and are ideal for the larger backups.
More recently cd-roms are becoming the standard for backing up data.
The cd burner is becoming very cheap to purchase and install and in most new computers, comes as standard.
Its simply a mater of reading and understanding the software that comes with your burner
and just as you would save your files with a floppy disk, you can do the same with your cd burner.
There are two types of recordable cd-roms, CD-R stands for CD Recordable. These roms can only be written
on once. CD-RW stands for CD Re-Writable. These roms can be used time and time again.
There are also options to backup your data on line. There are company's that will hold your data for you
and when you need a backup copy it is simply a matter of downloading for their web-site.
There is also out side software programs that you can purchase that can take the worry out of backing up
your files. Some of these programs will automatically backup your files and place them in a safe place until
they are needed.
