It has been fun learning and understanding your new computer
but unfortunately there are precautions you must take to secure your important files and documents. There are ways in which
some people can gain access to your computer and gain your personal information.
You may never have been broken into, or had information stolen via your computer, but be assured that it can happen and we need to take precautions to minimise this problem!
We will now take a look at a personal firewall that can help keep your information safe.
A Firewall is a software program that, if installed correctly can keep your information safe from other prying eyes on the internet.
If you are running windows XP, a basic firewall is available with this operating system and all you have to do is enable it.(See your windows help)
Please note this is a basic firewall that blocks incoming connection attempts only. If you accidentally install a Trojan or similar spyware program, information can still be sent from your computer.
If you choose, you can run a third party firewall with windows XP but you must remember to disable, (turn off) the XP firewall before you install the third party firewall program.
For a very highly recommended firewall, you may want to check out ZoneLabs.
You also need to note that it is no easy task to install a firewall if you are not an experienced computer user, so please
read the following website links fully to understand how to install a firewall correctly.
